Short version: what you say stays on your Mac. Murmur has no accounts, no analytics and no tracking, and it never uploads your audio or your text.
What stays on your Mac
- Your voice. Audio is recorded only while you hold the shortcut, transcribed by Apple's on-device speech recognition, and then discarded. It is never saved or sent anywhere.
- Your text. AI polish and voice editing use Apple Intelligence on your Mac. Your history, notes, snippets, dictionary and settings are stored locally and you can delete them at any time.
What Murmur sends over the network
- Speech model download. The first time you use a language, macOS downloads Apple's speech model. This is handled by Apple.
- License checks. When you activate, Murmur sends your license key and your Mac's name to our payment provider, Polar, so you can see and manage your activations. Polar returns an activation ID, which Murmur sends along with the key about once a week to check the license is still valid. No dictation, text or usage data is included.
- Free words unlock. If you choose to get extra free words, Murmur sends your email address and an anonymous ID for this Mac (a one-way hash of its hardware ID, not the ID itself) to our website, which emails you a code through our email provider, Loops. We keep your email and that Mac ID to make sure each Mac unlocks once. Your word count itself stays on your Mac.
- Launch price status. While you're on the free trial, Murmur asks our website about once an hour how many launch-price licenses are left. The request carries no account or license information, only what every web request does (such as your IP address).
Purchases
Payments are processed by Polar, our merchant of record. Polar collects your name, email and payment details to complete the sale, calculate tax and send your receipt. We receive your email and order details from Polar to provide support. See Polar's privacy policy.
Activating after checkout
After you pay, Polar sends you to our activation page with a checkout ID. Our website uses it once to look up the license key from that purchase in Polar, shows it to you, and hands it to Murmur. We don't store the checkout ID or the key on our servers.
This website
The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which keeps standard server logs (such as IP addresses) for security. We use no cookies, analytics or ads.
We only send marketing email (news about our Mac apps) if you tick "Email me about new Mac apps". That box is never ticked for you. Every email has an unsubscribe link, and unsubscribing doesn't affect your free words or your license. If you write to us, we use your message only to answer it. We never sell or share your information.
Emails are sent through Loops. To have your email and Mac ID deleted, write to us.
