The editor switches on too early
Typing invites fixing the sentence before the paragraph exists. Talking keeps you moving.
Hold right ⌘ and tell the scene. Clean prose lands in Scrivener, Word or Docs, without the ums, and the manuscript never leaves your Mac.

The rain had stopped by the time the bus reached the coast road.
She gets to the station and the train’s still there, but the doors are closing.
Typing invites fixing the sentence before the paragraph exists. Talking keeps you moving.
Plain dictation hands you every um and restart. Cleaning that up eats the time you saved.
A speech model doesn’t know your hero is Marek or your town is Halvorsund.
Hold right ⌘, talk the way you think, let go. Murmur drops the fillers, applies your corrections and types the result at your cursor.
“so she gets to the station and um the train’s already gone, no wait, it’s still there but the doors are closing”
She gets to the station and the train’s still there, but the doors are closing.
“new paragraph, Marek doesn’t look up uh he just like holds the ticket out”
Marek doesn’t look up. He just holds the ticket out.
Illustrations of AI polish (macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence), not recorded transcripts. Results vary with your voice and microphone.
Fillers out, “no wait” corrections applied, punctuation in.
Characters and places go in the Dictionary.
Select it, hold ⌥, say what to change.
Natural for prose, Verbatim for dialogue with deliberate tics.
Double-tap right ⌘ for hands-free. Tap again when the scene is done.
Speech recognition and the AI cleanup run on the Mac you’re writing on. Nothing is uploaded, and it works in Airplane Mode once a speech model is downloaded. Your writing app may still sync the document to its own cloud, which is a separate setting.

Details from each maker’s site, October 2026. If you mostly transcribe recorded interviews, a file transcription app such as MacWhisper suits you better.
Better you hear it here than after you buy.
On macOS 14 and 15 Murmur dictates with Parakeet or Whisper and tidies with rules, without the AI rewrite.
Live dictation and live calls only.
No iPad or iPhone app, so no dictating on a walk away from the Mac.
Polish fixes the mess of speech, not structure. Read everything before it goes to an editor.
Yes. Scrivener has no dictation of its own, but any Mac dictation tool that types at the cursor works in its editor. With Murmur, click into the Scrivener document, hold right ⌘ and talk. Add Scrivener in Murmur’s Styles to choose how its text is cleaned up, for example Natural for prose or Verbatim for dialogue.
Double-tap right ⌘ for hands-free mode and talk as long as you like; tap again to finish. For long sessions, most writers do better dictating a scene or a few paragraphs at a time, so each piece lands where they expect it and is easier to check.
Natural style removes fillers and false starts and fixes punctuation. Verbatim leaves every word exactly as you said it. If a rewrite ever goes too far, switch the app to Verbatim or turn polish to Off in Settings.
Apple Dictation is free and fine for short passages, but it writes down what you say, fillers included, on most Macs. A dedicated app adds cleanup, a dictionary for your character names and a history of what you said. Try it on a real chapter before you decide.

Yes. Murmur takes notes on Zoom, Meet and FaceTime calls with speaker labels, on your Mac. It can’t transcribe an audio file you recorded earlier. Tell people you’re taking notes; in many places the law requires it.
Your first 2,000 words are free, with no account. Try it on a real chapter.
